November 9th, 2006
9th of November.

Did anybody notice what date is today? Well most of the big german newspapers did not, at least not on their websites. On the 9th November 1989 the Wall fell. This day and everything that happened back then has always made my skin tickle and made me proud to be german and having lived in this time. Wikipedia gives actually a very good summary, in german! Of course.
Actually I just learned, that the 9th of November is very important day in german history.
There is one thing that always brings tears to my eyes. I saw a documentary a few years ago about the happenings of November 9th and the fall of the wall. It told about the press conference described in the wikipedia article above. Then the setting switched to the western german parliament where they held a discussion about taxes… or sth else very very boring… and they showed original footage of what happened next… you could see a guy storming in to the big parliament hall.. just yelling “the wall is down” … seconds of silence… and then.. without any comment a guy stands up an starts singing our national anthem… only a few words on its own … other ppl are standing up and joining him and within seconds the entire parliament is standing and singing… a perfect moment… remembering it, really really drives me off. Too beautiful to describe, by far too good to find matching words.
